Most traditional windows are either side-hinged or sliding sash windows. The popularity of the relatively new inventions in this segment, such as pivot hinges and friction mechanisms is also growing.
Three main types
- Side-hinged, or casement windows are probably the most frequently used type. Wood, aluminum or vinyl – all these materials are widely utilized. The window contains one, two or more opening casements, usually hinged on the sides of the window frame, although top-hung casements also exist.
- Sliding sash windows are comprised of two panels (sashes). In single-hung windows, only the bottom sash slides up, while in double-hung windows there are two vertically sliding sashes that allow to open either the top or the bottom part. The latter type is more convenient i.e., for cleaning the window from the inside of the house, and also safer for small children, since it rules out falling out of the window.
- Awning windows haven’t had the wide-spread popularity of the other kinds and are rarely installed in our days. The main issue with them is that the butt hinges (in the older models) or the friction hinges (in the newer ones) only allow the window to swing open to 45 degrees.
There are also the traditional grilles on certain windows – the technique was originally adopted to bring the cost of a down, since smaller panels were much less expensive, but nowadays they are popular for their historical look. There are now true divided windows, as well as removable grilles – an affordable way to add a touch of style to your home if you fancy it.
Actual sash replacement is not required as often as you may think, or as some window companies would like you to believe. Only in cases of advanced wood rot taking over your windows is it impossible to manage by removing the damaged parts, using an epoxy filler and repainting them.
